as someone who avidly reads and edits books, the word "overly" was used correctly here. As well it is used often in many modern novels because it is a common adverb. I also double checked and it is in my dictionary from 1953, meaning it is not a new word.

Learned about segregation laws in third grade I was sitting with my bestfriend McKenzie..and the lady talking to us felt the need to tell us not to hold hands or sit by each other because it “wouldn’t have been allowed” and I got in trouble for pushing back that it’s allowed now and she’s my bestfriend. Like why single us out so negatively..she was the only black girl so god forbid she wanted some comfort during this conversation in front of a bunch of white kids that weren’t taught to be kind. I’m still mad about it.😒
