FLASHBACK📌📌 Seventeen years ago. The summer rain had just stopped, leaving the rural estate air smelling of damp earth and crushed leaves. A ten-year-old Oom sat on the steps of the garden shed, sniffling softly as she wiped tears from her dirty cheeks with the back of her hand. Her knee was scraped, and her little wooden bowl of snacks had been overturned. "Hey. What are you crying for?" a stern, young voice called out. Eight-year-old Bam stepped around the corner, holding a makeshift wooden sword she'd fashioned from a tree branch. Her hair was tied back in a neat ponytail, her posture already carrying the rigid seriousness of an eldest daughter, but her eyes were full of fierce concern. "A noisy chicken chased me," little Oom sobbed, pointing a trembling finger toward a plump brown hen strutting arrogantly near the grass. "And I dropped my food." Young Bam looked at the chicken, then at the crying girl. Without a second thought, she puffed out her chest, held up her stick, and stomped toward the hen. "Get away!" young Bam declared heroically, shooing the bird until it clucked loudly and fluttered off into the coop. She marched back over to Oom, brushing her hands together victoriously. "See? I drove it away. You don't have to be scared." Little Oom looked up, her tear-stained face breaking into awe. "You're so brave." Young Bam's cheeks turned pale pink. She reached into her pocket, pulling out a warm, smooth boiled egg she had taken from the kitchen earlier. She carefully peeled the shell, split it right down the middle, and held out the larger half. "Here," young Bam said, trying hard to sound mature and solemn. "Eat this. My nanny said eggs make you strong so bad chickens can't bully you." Little Oom took the half-egg with wide, sparkling eyes. She took a big bite, chewing happily as her tears completely vanished. "It's so good! I love boiled eggs!" "I hate them," young Bam muttered, crossing her arms stiffly. "They're dry." "Then you can give all your eggs to me!" little Oom giggled, her dimples showing for the first time. She reached out, her small, egg-stained hand patting young Bam's cheek. "You're like a brave deer protecting me. A Bambi!" Young Bam gasped, her jaw tightening in childish indignation. "I am not a Bambi! I'm Bam Saralee!" "No, you're my Bambi," little Oom insisted cheerfully, taking another bite. "And when we grow up, if we don't have anyone else, you have to keep protecting me and feeding me eggs forever, okay? Promise?" Young Bam stared at the smaller girl, her heart fluttering with a fierce, unspoken urge to shield her from the world. She held out her tiny pinky finger. "Fine." Little Oom wrapped her small pinky tightly around hers, grinning brightly. "And make another promise too! If you don't have anyone you love after ten years, and I don't have anyone I love either then it should be Oom Oom, okay, Bambi?" Young Bam smiled lovingly. And replied, "Bambi promise Oom Oom." End of Flashback PRESENT DAY!! Bam always remembered. She smiled at that thought, as her thumb traced that paint on the canvas. The deep, lingering warmth filled her chest as all those tender years blossomed right before her eyes, the smell of rain, the wooden bench, the warm hands, the silly nickname that had belonged to Oom all along. The studio door clicked open. Oom came back, with fresh vegetables in her hand and she's a little wet from the rain. She paused near the entrance, shaking the raindrops from her hair before her eyes drifted over to where Bam was standing. "There is a storm and I think we're both stuck here together," Oom said, eyeing Bam then to the photograph she's holding. #oomeisaya #bamsaralee #oombam #austory #aurecommendation
