One that for years has been hidden away, behind the two oldest buildings in Nanaimo which are still in their original locations from the 1880s. The Backyard Nanaimo is located at 33 Victoria Crescent and recently opened for events, following the construction of new stairs that cost $40,000 to accommodate a second exit for safety. “It does feel like you walked back in time. It’s an amazing space with a lot of history, and in a very important part of downtown Nanaimo,” said Nathan Randall, owner of Victoria Crescent business Sound Heritage. It’s part of a grassroots-led effort by business owners to bring pride back to this city’s core, to celebrate it’s history and heart, that for years has been overshadowed by crime and social disorder. “It’s a space that for many years wasn’t utilized.
