@mr_azah: We arrived in Kasane, Botswana, from Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, ready to begin our search for the San people. Our Airbnb host, Tashita—whom we called Tasha—had spent almost a week organizing our journey to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Her plan would cost less than $1,300. We would travel together, sleep at her sister’s home near the reserve, and leave early the following morning for the San community. Tasha was extremely caring and protective. She did not want anyone to take advantage of us. However, one part of her plan worried me. To avoid excessive fees and complicated paperwork, we would travel as one family: Tasha and I as husband and wife, with Bayong as our son. I feared that bending the rules, especially while filming a documentary, could get us into trouble. After discussing it with Bayong and our field producer, Carlson, we decided to cancel her plan and travel on our own. I will never forget the disappointment on Tasha’s face. She had worked hard to arrange everything, yet she continued helping us and calling to make sure we were safe. In the end, Tasha’s plan would have cost less than $1,300. Without her, we spent more than $4,000. She had been right. Did I make the right decision by following my instincts, or should I have trusted Tasha? Tell me in the comments.
