Running in extreme heat has some benefits. ☀️ At least that’s what I kept telling myself while questioning every decision that led me to this moment. But there actually is science behind heat training. Repeated, controlled exercise in the heat can lead to heat acclimation, including: 🔥 Increased plasma volume — helping support stroke volume and cardiovascular stability. 🔥 Improved cooling — your body adapts with improved sweating and skin blood-flow responses. 🔥 Reduced cardiovascular strain — once acclimated, heart rate and core temperature can be lower at the same workload in the heat. 🔥 Better heat tolerance & performance — systematic reviews show heat acclimation can improve exercise capacity and performance in hot environments. But here’s the important part: One miserable run in the heat doesn’t magically make you fitter. These adaptations develop through repeated, progressive heat exposure, commonly over roughly 1–2 weeks. And deliberately dehydrating yourself isn’t the goal. Dehydration increases physiological strain and can hurt performance. And what about calories? Running in the heat can increase physiological stress at a given workload, but there isn’t good reason to treat extreme heat as some kind of calorie-burning or fat-loss hack. If the heat forces you to slow down, any difference in total energy expenditure may be negligible. Also, that 4 lbs you “lost” after your hot run? Congratulations. You sweated. 😂💦 Heat training can be a useful tool. Heat exhaustion is not a training adaptation. And nothing completes the experience quite like finishing a brutally hot run with a lukewarm electrolyte drink. 🤌 Train hard. Acclimate progressively. Hydrate appropriately. Don’t be an idiot. #Running #HeatTraining #HeatAcclimation #RunningTips #EnduranceTraining
