On July 30th 2005, our beloved leader, Dr. John Garang de Mabior, died when the Ugandan presidential Mi-172 helicopter carrying him crashed while returning from Rwakitura, Uganda, where he had met President Yoweri Museveni, a long-time friend. Garang had not informed the Sudanese government about the visit and therefore did not use the Sudanese presidential aircraft for international immunity and protection. Instead, he had indicated that he would spend the weekend in New Cush, a town near the Kenya–South Sudan border that he had established. The exact purpose of the meeting in Rwakitura and the identities of any other participants have never been publicly disclosed even to the embassy of Sudan in Kampala. After the helicopter had been missing for for more than 24 hours, President Museveni informed the Sudanese government, which then sought clarification from the SPLM. Initially, the SPLM reported that Garang's helicopter had landed safely at a former SPLA training camp, and Sudanese state television broadcast this information. However, later that night, Sudan's Information Minister, Abdel Basset Sabdarat, later appeared on television to withdraw the earlier report. It was subsequently revealed that SPLM spokesperson Yasir Arman had deliberately stated that the helicopter had landed safely to allow time for the movement to organise its internal leadership succession before officially announcing Garang's death. The helicopter had actually crashed on Friday, and Garang remained officially listed as missing throughout Saturday while the Sudanese government believed he was still in Southern Sudan. The office of President Omar al-Bashir eventually confirmed that the Ugandan presidential helicopter had crashed into a mountain range in southern Sudan due to poor visibility. The accident claimed the lives of Dr. John Garang, six of his companions, and seven Ugandan crew members. News of Garang's death sparked widespread unrest, triggering violent riots in Khartoum and several other major cities across Sudan.
