Not crispy. Black. Orm blinked. She slowly picked one up. “…” She picked up the second one. “…” Her lower lip trembled. “Lingling…” From the living room, Lingling immediately looked up from her laptop. “What happened, Darling?” Orm appeared in the doorway holding the two burned pieces of bread like evidence from a crime scene. “I ruined breakfast.” Lingling stared at the bread. Then at Orm. Then back at the bread. “You burned two pieces of bread?” Orm's eyes became watery. “I didn't mean to!” “You only had to press one button.” “I KNOW!” Orm pouted deeply. “The toaster betrayed me.” Lingling pressed her lips together, desperately trying not to laugh. Unfortunately— A tiny smile appeared. Orm gasped. “You're laughing at me!” “No.” “You ARE!” “I am not.” “You're smiling!” “Because you're adorable.” “I'M HAVING A BREAKFAST EMERGENCY!” Orm's eyes filled with tears. Lingling immediately closed her laptop. “Okay. No crying.” “But my bread…” “We'll make something else.” “I wanted toast…” “I know.” Orm sniffled. “I'm a failure.” Lingling stood and walked toward her. “You burned bread, Darling. You didn't destroy civilization.” Orm stared at her. “That sounds like something a person who can cook would say.” Lingling raised an eyebrow. “Stay here.” “Where are you going?” “To save breakfast.” Ten minutes later, the kitchen smelled incredible. Orm sat at the counter, watching Lingling cook. A stack of fluffy pancakes landed on a plate. Orm's eyes widened. “Whoa…” Lingling melted chocolate and drizzled it over the pancakes. Then she sliced strawberries into neat pieces. She added blueberries. More chocolate. A few strawberries on top. The final result looked almost too pretty to eat. Orm stared. Her tears completely disappeared. “Lingling…” “Yes?” “You're a genius.” Lingling smiled. “You were crying over toast five minutes ago.” “That was the past.” “Convenient.” Orm immediately grabbed a fork. Lingling gently stopped her. “Wait.” “Why?” “Take a picture first.” Orm's eyes sparkled. “For everyone to see?” “No.” Lingling leaned closer. “For me. I want proof that my wife can be happy without burned toast.” Orm pouted. “Mean.” “But you love me.” Orm immediately nodded. “Very much.” Lingling smiled. “Good. Eat.” Orm took a bite. Her eyes widened. “OH MY GOD.” Lingling laughed. “Good?” “So good!” Orm took another bite. Then another. Then she suddenly froze. “Lingling.” “Hm?” “I have a serious question.” “What?” Orm pointed at the pancakes. “Why did you marry me when I can't even toast bread?” Lingling looked at her for a moment. Then calmly took the fork from Orm and stole a bite of pancake. “Because.” Orm waited. Lingling smiled. “Someone has to protect the kitchen from you.” Orm gasped. “LINGLING!” Lingling laughed as Orm chased her around the kitchen with a strawberry in her hand. The two burned pieces of bread remained forgotten in the toaster. Breakfast was saved. The toaster, however… Would never recover from the accusations. °°° ♡
