@nytimes: Private-equity ownership is changing who can buy a sports team; and what that means for ticket prices, player decisions and the emotional bond between fans and the franchises they love. Pablo Torre, host of “Pablo Torre Finds Out,” joins Natalie Kitroeff on “The Daily” to discuss the skyrocketing valuations of sports teams as private equity changes the landscape of professional sports. #Sports #PrivateEquity #Lakers #PabloTorre
I also think sports leagues vastly underestimate how much legalized gambling is damaging the trust fans have.

imo sports teams are valued like fine art. Even though there is an underlying profitable business, the valuation is more dependent on the social appeal and the scarcity of owning a team.

Look at NASCAR, they were on top in the early 2000s and it’s been downhill since then

Wait, so then, you’d have to own the Lakers for 20 years to get your money back??? That doesn’t make sense, because the Walters’ ownership profited 2.5B after just one year! Granted, they didn’t intend to sell

If anyone wants to see how fans can be irrational and crazy, go the la clippers subreddit. They’re convinced Pablo is the worst journalist and want their billionaire owner to sue him

This has been said for a long time and values continue to climb. These aren’t normal businesses, owning one is like owning a Picasso, limited inventory makers the market.

Speaking as someone that was a huge baseball fan my whole life, but then had my team stolen from me, it is very possible to lose large swaths of the population of fans.

Directly related to why there are no sports teams in Oakland where the fans are some of the best in the country. Why the Chicago Bears, despite having a passionate fan base, are going to play in Indiana. Why the NY Giants and Jets don't play in New York. Billionaire owners are fleecing tax players and dumb mayors and tricked red areas are voting their stadiums in and selling us $12 water.

He is foregetting AI and meme. SpaceX’s valuation was waaaay higher and just as crazy. And so many doof buyers face val’d that calc that an iffy at 50 stock is trading at more than twice what it rationally should. Greenspan was problematic to be sure but he did one thing right when he came up with the term irrational exuberance. The only prob? That dook by OAF on the now. We need a new term… stupefying exuberance? Now, how does one look at a brand like the Lakers as a financial commodity next to Apple, NVidia, P&G, Ford, etc? They aren’t tech, they aren’t trad manufacturing, there is obvs IP, dynamic rev streams, a clear growth path via international expansion, even trad assets like Staples Center. The real fear is that next gen consumers turn away from the corporatist money squeeze and spend more time on soc and esports, or even back-to-nature doings. Take a hike instead of watching a live game. And forget about the live in person experience. That is for a shrinking set of fanatics and the uber wealthy. Hmmmmm.

Private equity ruins everything. It’s all just about maximizing shareholder profit now for these teams. They know fans will eat up whatever they put out there

I can say that as a 53-year-old man who used to voraciously watch NFL football and NBA basketball, it's very easy to walk away from it. I can't tell you the last time I watched a full football game or a full basketball game. it's literally been at least a decade.
