And for context, these people are literally sitting in a nursing home holding signs saying they “once were” a housekeeper, dog groomer, welder, etc. That’s exactly why this doesn’t hit me as heartwarming nostalgia. Their generation could work ordinary jobs, buy homes, build equity, retire, and eventually afford long-term care. Millennials can work those same jobs today, struggle just to afford rent, and then get told we complain too much or don’t work hard enough. And the part that really gets me: many of that same generation spent decades voting for policies and politicians that weakened the very affordability, worker protections, pensions, housing access, and social programs they benefited from. So no, this trend doesn’t make me nostalgic. It reminds me how much ordinary work used to provide—and how much of that ladder was pulled up behind them.
