Some mornings don’t go according to plan… I woke up before sunrise, stepped into the shower, and everything seemed perfectly normal. Until I stepped out to grab my razor. Bathroom flooded. So there I was—soaking wet—running across the property borrowing towels from the Inn before sunrise. Then I heard a mysterious alarm. Naturally… I became a detective. I searched the property. Crawled beneath the house. Met a wolf spider, a centipede, and a rat trap that made me question all my life choices. Never did find the alarm. Called the plumber. While we were talking, I noticed a lone egret standing nearby. I actually asked him, “Why are you here? Where’s the rest of your flock?” Then I started laughing. “I think he’s as out of place as I am.” A few hours later, I finally looked at my work phone. My boss had texted me at 4:51 a.m. “Are you awake?” By the time I saw it at 9:46 a.m., I’d already: ✔️ Flooded the bathroom ✔️ Borrowed towels ✔️ Chased a mystery alarm ✔️ Crawled beneath the house ✔️ Called the plumber ✔️ Interviewed an egret… ✔️ Discovered the freezer had quit working too. Later, I told the whole story to my fictional memoir editor, Thomas Hale. He listened quietly, smiled, and said, “April… Tomorrow morning… before you take a shower… check the freezer first.” I laughed. “I make no promises.” He smiled. “I rather hoped you wouldn’t. Some of my favorite stories seem to begin that way.” ⚓ Hold Fast. Some mornings don’t ask for perfection. They simply become stories. — April Mudrick © 2026 #InTheMargins #thomashale #thomashalerLife #AlaskanDippedInAloha #HoldFast
