Shoot some of those army units were doing 13-15 month deployments in Afghanistan but I couldn’t imagine being on a ship for a long ass time

I know where he was and roughly when because he said “Mongolian BBQ on tuesdays”. That’s so sad lol. YES, I have also been on long deployments, my longest was after a 6 month tour in the initial deployment of Afghanistan, we almost immediately went to Iraq to do the invasion. That initial invasion, because of the 90 days of extensions Bush gave, put us at nearly 14 months. Kuwait + Iraq. However, being stuck outside, moving around, getting opportunities for hot chow and decent sleep, sometimes in open areas; that beats 260 days of being cooped up in a ship with a 6x3x3’ sleeping rack (if you have the top rack) and getting to a point where you’re given scraps for meals because you’re running out of food, and having no options for latrines so you have to use the busted heads. No, frankly I would rather have 12 months outside and getting shot at than 9 months in the hold of a stinking ship with fuel contaminated water and garbage for mess.

Sounds like our sailors don’t even have sufficient food. And have you seen their sleeping quarters and their lavatories. It’s so heartbreaking.

I think part of the mental aspect of the mission is its purpose. My first deployment was 12 months in 2003 and at that time he believed in the mission. I don’t believe in whatever it is that we are trying to do in Iran so that makes it more mentally challenging.

At the end of the day, the training is designed to instill a mindset that goes far beyond physical strength; it fundamentally conditions you mentally as well. As he puts it, enduring 14–16 hours of training every single day, seven days a week, is something most people simply aren’t capable of sustaining. And considering everything he went through and endured, the training he completed before becoming a Navy SEAL must have seemed like nothing compared to what was yet to come.
