Why does it sometimes feel like the world is slowly losing its colour? Look around a modern city and the answer can seem surprisingly obvious. Grey concrete. Reflective glass. Black steel. White walls. Across many cities, buildings increasingly share the same neutral palettes and minimalist forms, creating environments that can feel remarkably similar despite being thousands of kilometres apart. But this wasn't always the case. Architecture has always reflected the materials, culture, technology, and values of the society that created it. Historic buildings often used local stone, colourful tiles, painted façades, decorative details, and materials that gave individual neighbourhoods a distinct visual identity. Modern architecture changed that relationship. As industrialisation made materials such as concrete, steel, and glass more widely available, architects gained new ways to construct buildings quickly and efficiently. Modernist design also placed greater emphasis on simplicity, functionality, clean lines, and the idea that unnecessary decoration could be removed. Over time, these principles spread around the world. The same minimalist aesthetic could be adapted to an office tower in London, an apartment block in Tokyo, or a shopping centre in almost any major city. There were obvious advantages. Neutral colours can make buildings easier to maintain. Simple forms can reduce construction costs. Standardised materials can make projects faster to build, while flexible interiors can be adapted for different uses. But something can also be lost in the process. When entire neighbourhoods are dominated by the same shades of grey, black, and white, cities can begin to feel interchangeable. The buildings may be functional... But do they feel memorable? Do they reflect the identity of the place? And perhaps most importantly, do they make people actually want to spend time there? That's where a shift may already be happening. Architects and designers are increasingly experimenting with colour, greenery, natural materials, textured surfaces, and warmer interiors. Instead of treating buildings as isolated objects, some projects are designed around how people experience them. Plants soften concrete. Wood adds warmth. Colour creates identity. Natural materials introduce texture. And unusual façades can turn an ordinary building into a landmark. This doesn't necessarily mean that minimalist architecture is disappearing. Instead, the future may be about finding a better balance between simplicity and personality. Because cities aren't just collections of buildings. They're places where people live, work, meet, relax, and create memories. Perhaps the question isn't whether architecture should be colourful or minimalist. It's whether our cities can be both functional and human. Because the buildings we create today will shape the visual identity of our cities for generations.
