It might declare "done" while tests are still failing. Hooks fix this by making critical behaviors deterministic. Here's the idea. Every tool call Claude makes passes through a lifecycle. Before the tool runs, after it finishes, when Claude is about to stop. You attach shell scripts to these lifecycle events, and they fire automatically. Not most of the time. Every time. The image below shows exactly how this works. Claude generates a tool call. Before it executes, the ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ง๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—น๐—จ๐˜€๐—ฒ hook intercepts it. Your bash firewall script checks the command against dangerous patterns. If it matches ๐—ฟ๐—บ -๐—ฟ๐—ณ / or a force-push to main, ๐—ฒ๐˜…๐—ถ๐˜ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ ๐Ÿฎ blocks the call entirely and sends the error back to Claude for self-correction. If it's safe, ๐—ฒ๐˜…๐—ถ๐˜ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ ๐Ÿฌ lets it through. The tool runs. After it finishes, the ๐—ฃ๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜๐—ง๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—น๐—จ๐˜€๐—ฒ hook kicks in. A one-liner runs ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ on the file Claude just wrote. Clean output, every time, without Claude needing to remember. But that's just the mechanical part. The real power is in what you enforce. A ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฝ hook that runs ๐—ป๐—ฝ๐—บ ๐˜๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜ and blocks Claude from finishing until the suite is green. A ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜ hook that injects the current git branch into context automatically. A ๐—ก๐—ผ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป hook that pings your desktop when Claude needs attention. The exit code behavior is worth understanding before you write your first hook ๐—˜๐˜…๐—ถ๐˜ ๐Ÿฌ means success. ๐—˜๐˜…๐—ถ๐˜ ๐Ÿญ means error but non-blocking, execution continues normally. Only ๐—ฒ๐˜…๐—ถ๐˜ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ ๐Ÿฎ actually blocks and feeds your error message to Claude. Using ๐—ฒ๐˜…๐—ถ๐˜ ๐Ÿญ for security hooks is the most common mistake. It logs a warning and does absolutely nothing to stop the action. The entire configuration lives in ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐˜€.๐—ท๐˜€๐—ผ๐—ป under a ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ธ๐˜€ key. Each hook gets a matcher regex to target specific tools and a shell command to run. Commit it to git and your whole team gets the same guardrails. A ๐—–๐—Ÿ๐—”๐—จ๐——๐—˜.๐—บ๐—ฑ that says "always run ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ" is a hope.
