But 500 years ago, this was the Bokoni civilization — a thriving, engineered society that fed over 100,000 people. They were master farmers and engineers. They built stone terraces on steep hillsides to stop erosion, and created "livestock highways" — walled stone pathways that kept cattle from eating the crops. They weren't isolated, either. They traded gold, ivory, and iron across the Indian Ocean network, bringing in Chinese porcelain and glass beads. At the center of this landscape is Inzalo yeLanga, the "Birthplace of the Sun." The late, great Credo Mutwa called it the holiest place on the African continent. It is one of the world's oldest functional solar calendars, perfectly aligned to track the solstices, equinoxes, and the African New Year (uMandulo) in September. Though the Mfecane wars of the 1820s forced the Bokoni to scatter and join other groups like the Pedi and Northern Sotho, their legacy endures. The stones remain. The bloodline flows.
