as a woman, i saw them and thought they should be handed out regularly and discussed in secondary schools. our “homegrown” men need to learn this too

I think about the fact when the show Adolescence came out, there was a massive outcry from parents at the British government for wanting to show it in schools bc they didn’t want teenage boys to feel accused?

What wound me up have been the Men in comments. I saw a clip of a woman explaining that they want these leaflets for all people not just migrants because if you look at the numbers of sexual violence, all of the UK need the leaflet not just migrants. But I see Men just hyper-locking in on the anti-migrant agenda ignoring completely what the Woman is saying. Drives me insane the cognitive dissonance that some men have.

If you go to any hospital or sexual health clinic, school, university, there’s consent & domestic abuse pamphlets everywhere. It’s the absurd notion that “you shouldn’t need to tell people this” …well we do tell british people this, every single day, we have lessons about consent in school all throughout.

Don't forget the "protect our women and children" bloke following the 15 year old girl around saying "I'm going to get out in prison because of you"
So yea, those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones

Have you read Laurie Penny's book? She digs into this, and how patriarchy basically convinces men that the bad ones look like 1920 villains in tophats who slink into alley ways, rather than teaching us a more accurate picture: our friends and family members

there’s quite literally a national crisis about violence against women and girls in the UK. We need to take a hard look at ourselves before worrying about immigrants.

Marital rape is not a crime in many places and wasn’t a crime in the UK until 1991. Consent in the way we talk about it is such a new concept and many people, both women and men, don’t understand it

100%. they love to play the whole ‘it’s obvious what is and isn’t wrong’ but if they are told about coercion, harassment, assault or grooming they will deny that is even what it is. it’s like the crime only exists to them when it’s already happened, provable in a court of law and at its ‘worst’/most severe version. this is the problem with hinging your own morals on the law and not doing anything to educate yourself or learn better. it’s ignorance in its purest form — if they don’t know, it doesn’t exist and if they don’t agree, it isn’t true.

Firstly - consent at its most basic level should be taught to everyone. And It’s also removing a defence of ‘I didn’t know’ if they do commit one of these crimes
