@realafricastories: I read that the Freemasons in Britain are looking for a new generation of members, and you know me, I immediately wondered what was happening in Africa. Freemasonry has existed across Africa for centuries, with lodges established during the colonial period in places including Cape Town, Lagos, Nairobi and Cairo. But colonial rule ended, so why is Freemasonry still there? Who controls it today? Why do people join an organisation that remains secretive and controversial? And most importantly, are Freemasons actively recruiting new members in Africa? What I found raises a much bigger question about colonial institutions that survived independence.
