But investigators soon uncovered the devastating truth: there had been no kidnapping. Hershall had already been gone for weeks. According to police and court records, Michael Kendrick allegedly admitted to striking Hershall multiple times while intoxicated and aggravated. Authorities say those injuries ultimately led to the child's death. His remains were later discovered hidden near the McClure Street Bridge. What makes this tragedy even more heartbreaking are the allegations surrounding what happened afterward. Authorities say Hershall's body was concealed, transported in a suitcase, and disposed of. His mother, Ashley Johnson, allegedly failed to report his death and was also charged in connection with the alleged cover-up. In April 2026, both suspects faced upgraded criminal charges. Kendrick faces charges including murder, involuntary manslaughter, child endangering, gross abuse of a corpse, and tampering with evidence. Johnson faces charges including gross abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence, and obstructing justice. Behind every charge is a little boy who should still be here.
