@absolutelynot19: When we were selecting names I would ask random strangers to try to pronounce them and if it was alphabet soup, instant veto. #babynames #nordicnames #icelandic

Same with Irish. Americans seem to struggle with Niamh, Caoilfhionn, Aoife and Siobhán. (Pronounced “Neev”, “Keelin”, “eefuh” and “shivahn”) when they’re spelt out their brains explode

My son’s name is Venanzio. Years ago, when he was a teenager, we were at Starbucks and he placed an order. When they asked for his name, without missing a beat he said, “Michael.” I looked at him in complete disbelief. He just looked back at me and said, “Just go with it, Mom.” 😂

My family is Chinese American. We have Chinese names for Chinese speakers, and English names for English speakers. Most Americans mouths simply aren’t trained to pronounce Chinese sounds, and their ears aren’t trained to hear the difference in tones. They butcher it hilariously. I think it would be cruel to them and an inconvenience to us to have to do an entire speech therapy session whenever we want someone to say our name. Additionally, it messes with the flow of speech to be speaking English and then all of a sudden insert a properly pronounced foreign word. I don’t blame people at all for wanting English speakers to pronounce their non-English names correctly, but I feel this is a double standard that isn’t usually applied to non English speakers. I never expect non-Chinese speakers to pronounce my Chinese name perfectly, just as I don’t expect non English speakers to pronounce my English name perfectly.

Kids can be cruel, the names sound beautiful but you saved your child years of bullying.

My family is Caribbean and don’t pronounce the letter “h” very well. I named him Theo and for the first 4 years of his life he thought his name was “teee-yo”… it’s definitely worth considering if the people around your kid will be able to say their name.

Jonas is nice because it’s Jonas in English. My aunt gave all her children names that are the same in both languages

As an HR rep who sees all sorts of cultural names, thank you. 😅 I hand to look people up by their name over the phone and I would have an immediate panic attack if I tried to spell any of those 😭

I'm sorry, but none of these sounds matched the letters you were showing, in my American brain. i would butcher both the pronunciation and the spelling of these if you said them & let me spell them. well, Jonas I would understand, because I worked with a Jonas that was pronounced Yonas
