The A330’s main landing gear uses a four-wheel bogie, and when the gear is extended, the bogie sits in a trailing position with the rear wheels slightly lower. That means the rear tires can contact the runway first, allowing the load to build progressively rather than hitting the entire bogie at once. Then comes the part you can’t easily see: the oleo-pneumatic shock absorber. It combines hydraulic fluid with compressed nitrogen to absorb and dissipate the energy generated during touchdown, while also handling the loads experienced during taxi and landing. The A330 family is a true heavyweight. Depending on the variant, its maximum landing weight is roughly 174–191 tonnes. For example, the A330-300 has maximum landing weights up to 182 tonnes depending on the weight variant, while the A330-900 is rated at 191 tonnes. What looks like a simple wheel touching the runway is actually a carefully controlled transfer of energy from an aircraft moving through the air to a massive structure rolling on the ground.
