I don't understand, there are words I don't know, plenty of them I'm sure. Are we making fun of people for not knowing a word, or not knowing how to spell it? I don't get the joke. I did look at the lists and most of those words aren't in most people's daily vernacular. Most people aren't using Ignominious to describe the president's Iran war they just say train wreck.

A distinction must be made between reading “epitome” as “epi-tome” or mispronouncing a foreign word and actually not being able to read. If they are phonetically sounding the word out, but it’s the wrong pronounciation, they are literate, but just don’t have a big vocabulary, or in the case of foreign words, aren’t cultured. Now, it’s good for these people to work on expanding their vocab, but let’s not lump it in with actually illiteracy, which is an issue that needs to be remedied largely due to the shift in teaching from phonics to sight reading.
