Jing's POV: I met Jan during our first year in college. Technically, she stole my seat... "That's my seat." She looked at the chair then at me. "There's no name on it." "But I sat there yesterday." "Too bad, should've been here earlier." I was about to fight her, but she moved her bag anyways. So, I sat down while she continued writing notes. That was Jan... Blunt Quiet Annoyingly calm Yet somehow four years later, she became the person I look first whenever I enter a room. By second year, we eventually stopped pretending we weren't attached to each other. She'd save me a seat. I buy her coffee. She steals my fries. I steal them back. She complains. I ignore. Felt like a system. Only her and I would understand. One time, I fell asleep during class. When I woke up I noticed my head was already on her shoulder. "Sorry." "You drooled." "I did not!" Then she held up her sleeve. And yes, there was a tiny wet spot. I stared in horror while Jan was laughing. "You should've seen your face!" She said while laughing. "You let me sleep like that!?" "You looked comfortable." Then she guides my head back to her shoulders. "There, five more minutes so you wouldn't be cranky." I closed my eyes, then suddenly felt my heart doing something stupid. Sometimes, we'd study 'til midnight. I'd complain when I get tired while she just quietly pass me her snack. "Here." "I'm fine." "You said that hours ago." Then she'd unwrap her snack and put it in front of me. "Eat." "You sound like my mom." "You're mom's not here." "Fair." She continues studying while I secretly steal glances. There's just something comforting when I'm with Jan. She never made a big deal out of caring. She just... does it. Of course... Everyone teased us, especially Namtan. "You guys are practically married." Jan rolled her eyes. "She's my best friend!" I laughed, although a little sting was felt on my chest. "You don't see it?" Namtan stared at us. "See what?" Jan asked mockingly. She sighed. "Nevermind." On my birthday, Jan gave me a small box containing a cheap keychain. It was ugly. But I loved it. "You remembered?" "You mentioned it once." "That was months ago." "I remember things." "Then... I'll keep it forever." I told her as I clipped it onto my bag. "Good." She smiled. Her smile stayed in my head the whole night. Then graduation came. Like any other graduation, we took a lot of pictures and made a lot of promises. Promised... To stay close. To visit each other. To keep in touch. As our graduation ended... Jan and I headed outside our old lecture hall. She leaned against the wall while I rested my head on her shoulder. "You're going to miss me." "You're very confident." She laughed. "Am I wrong though?" "...No." "Good." I smiled. "Don't disappear on me." I told her as I closed my eyes. She went quiet for a while before answering. "I won't..." Yet, she did. Not at once. Just... Little by little. Our messages became shorter. Plans became harder. I'd call sometimes. Jan: "Sorry I'm busy." Jing: "When are you free?" Jan: "I'll let you know." Yet she never did. At first... I was annoyed. Then I got hurt. Then, later I convinced myself it didn't matter. She had a life of her own. Maybe... We simply grew apart. Maybe... That's what happens after college. People move on... So I did too. Life continued, we'd text every now and then. Only this time, it's always shorter. So I decided to start dating. Big mistake. That's when I finally realized something was wrong. Everyone was nice, funny, interesting, and beautiful. But every time they smile, I wanted someone else's. In the middle of me dating, I always rememberJan. I remember how easily her hands fit into mine. Then one night, I saw an old photo of her wearing my hoodie. I stared at it before laughing. "Oh..." Then it all made sense. I wasn't looking for someone. It has always been Jan all along. That's when I decided, I was done being afraid. I'm going to ruin the friendship. #janjingjingau #janjingjing #janhae #jingjingyu #thaigl
