@mariaaudhd: I'm not irritable with my safe person. I am autistic and ADHD, and what looks like snapping at him is actually my nervous system hitting overload before I even realize it. By the time I'm short with him, I've usually been masking all day — holding eye contact, filtering noise, translating tone, all the invisible labor of an autistic brain in a neurotypical world. He just happens to be the first safe place I can finally put it down. It's not that he did something wrong. It's sensory overload and emotional dysregulation hitting at the same time, and he's the only person close enough to catch it. Co-regulation goes both ways — I need him calm so my body can borrow that calm back. I used to think this made me a bad partner. Now I know it makes me an autistic, ADHD person whose safe person absorbs the exhaustion nobody else sees. #audhd #adhd #actuallyautistic #neurodivergent #autism

I fixed this with my partner by creating a system (well actually it was his idea 😂) So right when he comes home we do an hour window of no acknowledgment. That way I can adjust without taking it out on him. Then after the hour we only engage by me being the one to initiate the conversation (so it feels like my choice). There are good days where I don’t need this system and bad days where I’m not ready to talk to him until like 9 pm 🤷‍♀️😂 But it works for us, neither of us take it personally and I feel zero pressure on my end. It’s been 5 years and I feel really lucky to have such an accommodating partner ❤️

could this be a transition issue ? going from alone time to being monitored with the heavy expectation of another being around you is sometimes an entirely different environment.

A big memory from my childhood is experiencing this. I’d come home and have a really hard time regulating. My parents would complain that I’m “so good at school, why can’t I be good at home too?” I’d tell them I can’t act all day. They’d tell me I should be saving the “good version” of me for the people I love. Which felt really isolating, knowing they wanted the masked version of me.

Learning about this isn't license to continue this. People should use this to better understand themselves and figure out an outlet that's healthier for both themselves and their partner

yes okay understandable but you cannot do this to a person all the time because there's actually a name for that too, "making someone your punching bag"

Yeah, you can name this behavior and have a blame for this behavior, but that doesn’t inherently make the behavior okay unfortunately. This is one of those things that you need to work on as a partner. Your partner still has feelings and emotions, too. ♥️And self-growth is important and possible.

Giving a behavior a clinical-sounding name doesn’t automatically make it an excuse. If autism makes emotional regulation harder, that explains the struggle, but it doesn’t remove responsibility for how you treat other people. Understanding the cause and expecting accountability can coexist.

I hate it, they don’t deserve it. It’s worse when they’re nice about it when you’ve just been a bitch for an hour and want to sink into the floor and they’re just like, have you eaten today. Not that I want them to get mad but it would be an understandable response.

still our responsibility imo (autistic adult here too!) to take steps towards some type of resolution instead of just throwing up hands and saying "I'm irritable, deal with it"
