Highly recommend watching a video of Jeffrey Lang if you haven’t. He describes a verse in the Quran with a meaning that even as a born Muslim changed my perspective a lot.

Just fyi- the Quran is not in order. You may find it that it starts a topic and suddenly turns into something else.

Regarding ayah 108: it's about the Israelites who kept asking Moses PBUH for more miracles, until they asked him to show them God so they can see him with their own eyes. just as u beautifully said, it's not about them asking in order to understand, it's about them refusing to believe in God

Why Muslims were told NOT to use it. Although “Ra‘ina” is a valid Arabic word, it had a double meaning in Hebrew and in the dialect of some Jews in Madinah. In their language, “Ra‘ina” sounded like a derogatory insult, meaning: “O foolish one”, “O ignorant one”, “O one who is slow / stupid”. So some from Ahl‑al‑Kitāb (people of the Book) used it intentionally to insult the Prophet ﷺ while pretending it was the Arabic meaning. Qur’an stopped Muslims from using it. Unthurna — ٱنظُرْنَا. Literal meaning, Means: “Look toward us,” “Give us attention,” “Wait for us,” “Be patient with us.”

“Rāʿinā” carries a meaning like “tend to us” or “shepherd us,” whereas “Unẓurnā” means something like “pay attention to us” or “take care of us.”

Hello Jessica, nice to see that you are back to read the Quran. Regarding questioning, we are encouraged to ask questions but God wants us to be Genuine in questioning. Not to be arrogant about it or delaying obligation. Regarding 111 and 112, the prophet himself said: I will not enter paradise by being a prophet or by my good deeds, I may enter paradise only by God’s mercy. So simply God is saying, no one will know who will end up in heaven only him knows. So preventing people from judging each other by religion or by backgrounds, they can only compete in doing good more in life. That’s everyone’s test. And hopefully going to heaven by God’s mercy. So we need to do good to ourselves and people around us as much as we can and let it be God’s mercy on us.

think of the kind of questions back from the story of the cow. moses gave clear instructions, but they kept asking over and over which kind of cow: thinking they're making Moses's work harder when they only made it more difficult for themselves.
questions to gain guidance is totally acceptable, QUESTIONING because--like you said--they didn't like the message and didn't want to do the command are the kind of questions that are damming.

The story of the golden calf is a great example of the kinds of questions being called out. "What kind of calf should we sacrifice? old or young. working or non working. what color..." the kinds of questions that aren't about knowledge or understanding, but delaying and defiance.

.I’d like to be the first to congratulate you. There is a beautiful expression in Arabic: “You will recognize them by the mark upon their faces.”
A sincere heart that genuinely searches for the truth cannot fail to find it. Before you finish reading the Holy Qur’an, insha’Allah, your heart will be filled even more with light and faith, and may Allah increase you in closeness to Him, guidance, and نور.
A sincere heart that truly seeks the truth is never left without guidance. Allah rewards those who sincerely search and guides them to the path of truth.
Congratulations once again, from your brother from the other side of the world SouthLebanon, and from the bottom of my heart.

The very crux of the Surah Baqrah is that the people of Moses had never ending questions and even though they received satisfactory answers they kept asking more thinking they could outsmart Moses and therefore his Lord, Allah.

The "question" referred to in the verse signifies a *demand* rather than an inquiry, investigation, or search for information; this is because the Jews used to ask—or rather, demand—that Moses provide them with a god they could see or perform miracles for them, among other requests they wanted him to fulfill.

Bless you jessica. When the prophet reached madina they tried engage in controversion religious discussions and provoking. Raina could have the double meaning of “let us hear” but in hebrew it can be “let us be deaf” meaning we don’t really want hear like being sarcastic.

It’s honestly really great how deeply you’ve been following the quran and taking the time to understand and explain each verse. Your explanations are genuinely so interesting to follow. One thing I’d love to add from an Islamic perspective is that the quran is understood to have layers and depths of meaning, so its meaning isn’t necessarily exhausted by one explanation. The prophet spoke about the profound depth and vastness of the quran and islamic tradition speaks of its outward and inward dimensions. Even within the quran there are things whose complete meaning we don’t claim to know. Some surahs begin with letters like Alif Lam Mim or Ya Sin ( which eventually inchallah you will reach while reading ) and despite centuries of scholarship, there is no single definitive explanation of what they mean. That’s what I find so beautiful about the quran you can read the same verse today and understand it one way, then return to it years later and discover something completely different. Not because the verse changed, but because you changed and your understanding deepened.

I think the biggest distinction between the 3 scriptures and revelation was that two of them was only for the children of Israel and Islam was for the whole of mankind. So technically most westerners are practicing a religion that was not for them to follow. Islam was given to them.

I think the closest meaning of AYA 108 is warining not ask for things like what the people of Muses asked such as "let us see GOD".
