@purascans: A few products you use every day carry ingredients that have been recalled, restricted, or banned elsewhere — and most of it never gets a second look on the label. Here's what to know, and the easy swaps. Whitening toothpaste. Many are whitened with titanium dioxide — a colorant the EU banned from food in 2022. It's still allowed in toothpaste here. Titanium-dioxide-free brands skip it. Conventional lotion. A lot use DMDM hydantoin, a preservative that slowly releases formaldehyde as it sits. Fragrance-free, preservative-clean lotions skip it. Chemical sunscreen. In 2021, benzene turned up in dozens of sunscreens, and brands including Banana Boat recalled products over it. Mineral zinc skips the chemical filters — it's one of only two the FDA recognizes as safe and effective. Sulfate shampoo. The sulfates can carry 1,4-dioxane, a manufacturing contaminant that doesn't appear on the label. Sulfate-free formulas cut the main source. None of this is worth stressing over.
