you’ve been beating yourself up for “lacking discipline,” but the truth is you forgot something children learn in 8th grade: you live in a human body. and if you want to trade well, there are 3 things you need to understand about the human brain: 1. 🧠 your body is wired for survival - not for trading. for roughly 300,000 years the human brain evolved with one primary job: keep you alive. whenever the brain detects a threat, it activates survival mode. over time the brain learned that money is tied to survival. money buys food, shelter, and safety. so when money is threatened, your brain interprets it as danger. a losing trade can trigger the same response as a physical threat. when that happens the amygdala (the fear center) activates and the prefrontal cortex (the part responsible for rational decision-making) becomes less active. in trading, that shows up as emotional reactions: freezing, revenge trading, or moving your stop-loss because your brain is trying to escape the threat. 2. 📉 your brain hates losses twice as bad as it enjoys gains. psychologists call this loss aversion. from a survival perspective this makes sense. avoiding danger was more important than chasing rewards. but in trading this wiring creates a problem: you cut winners early and let losers run. when you’re in profit, your brain wants to lock in certainty. but when you’re in a losing trade, it resists closing because realizing the loss feels extremely painful. 3. 🎰 your brain is addicted to dopamine. dopamine drives motivation and reward. historically it pushed humans to hunt, explore, and pursue resources. today instant dopamine is everywhere - food delivery, netflix, youtube, tiktok, music, podcasts, and social media. over time your brain adapts to constant stimulation and loses tolerance for what trading requires most: patience. which is why you over-leverage or take low-quality setups just to feel that
