@c4news: Hundreds of children in Gaza took part in a day of swimming and games, aimed at helping them cope with the psychological trauma of conflict and displacement. The ‘Waves of Hope’ event provided children with a safe environment to play together and experience a moment of joy, organisers said. Under the project, 90 children who have lost limbs or parents in Israeli attacks received swimming lessons from coaches who were themselves amputees. The Gaza Strip is home to the highest number of child amputees per capita, according to the UN, a situation worsened by overwhelmed hospitals and shortages of medicine and prosthetic limbs due to Israeli restrictions on aid entering the enclave. Coaches say swimming can help amputee children begin to rebuild their confidence and cope with their life-changing injuries.
