In the first place, why'd you add $2 in $27? The $2 tip is already included in the payment ($27) of the 3 men, you either should have added the $3 dollars returned the $3 men or if you're asking where is it, the cashier already returned the $3 dollars. You shouldn't be looking for the dollar, the demonstration itself is wrong.

The question is posted incorrectly and aimed to confuse. The room is not $30. $5 has been refunded and so the room really cost $25. But they ended up paying a total of $27 because the other person kept $2. There is no missing dollar. The difference between the original price of room and new price is $30-$27=$3.00. This is the refund which was divided between the three of them

you must add 3$ to 25, not subtract them from 30, than 25+3=28, +2=30 each one of them payed 10, but as all 3 together should have payed 25, thay get now those 3 to that what each would have payed at 25:3, which is 8,333...

Each pays $10, for a total of $30. $5 needs to be returned since those cost is $25 and paid amount was $30. Out of that $30, $25 goes to the clerk, $5 in change is given to the bellhop. ($25 + $5 is still $30). $3 is returned and two is kept (25+3+2). The assumption of paying $9 is wrong; they each paid $8.33 for the room and are shorted $0.67 which is where the $2 tip comes from. Your brain created the missing $1

The perspective is wrong. There’s $30 in the transaction. $30 paid in, then the $5 refund. Each of the original 3 got $1 back. 30-5=25. 1 x 3 is the refund back to customers. 2 went to the tip. Total in the transaction is 30. 25 + 3 +2 = 30

In total they paid 25, roughly 8.33 each.. then you class the £2 tip as payment so 2 divided by 3 = 0.66 , in total 9 paid if numbers fully accurate to decimal

The $1 is lost when you change the point of reference, it's the difference between what the customers have been defrauded with reference to the true cost of the room and what the hotel has been defrauded with reference to the presumed cost of the room.
