For pregnant clients, salicylic acid is an absolute no in my treatment room. And yes, I know low-percentage salicylic acid in home care may be considered acceptable during pregnancy. That is a separate conversation for the client and their medical provider. I’m talking about professional treatments, backbar products, and chemical peels where the concentrations are higher and we simply do not have enough pregnancy safety research for me to think an elective facial is worth the risk. That includes Jessner solutions and those sneaky little “gentle glow peels” that combine lactic or glycolic acid with a small percentage of salicylic acid. Read the entire ingredient list. Not just the cute name on the front of the bottle. If salicylic acid is anywhere in the formula, I am not using it on a pregnant client. I’ll choose a gentle enzyme or lactic acid treatment instead, as long as the manufacturer approves it for pregnancy and the client’s skin can tolerate it.
