Gents must realise that they need to be present. I come from a family of generations of marriages & didn’t understand the black norm until I was in my 20s & people were shocked at how I walk about my dad a lot. In conversations with gents, I realise that gents don’t actually want to be present. Many adults even speak about father who were absent despite being in the home. It came with the father’s chair. They were not to be asked for anything. They were not to be spoke too, really, unless giving instructions like: “Wash the car”. Sometimes they’d be drunk and be chaotic. We need to make choices to be present as gents. Many people grew up in homes with no family structure. We need to realise that it’s problematic and then work towards fixing that. Also, people are drunk and high ko kasi, how do they then raise kids when they’re on Ncika, woonga, Nyaope and whatever else? We need to fix our social problems too.

we see and know the value firsthand, especially if you were tied to the hip to your own dad and he taught you so many life skills - however begging a hurt, inconsistent father to be more present, can be extremely tumultuous.
