@footnotesh1story: New York Was Fifty Degrees on Sunday — By Monday Fifteen Thousand People Were Trapped in Trains Above the Street The Great Blizzard of March 11-14, 1888 - the 'Great White Hurricane' - struck the US East Coast after an unusually mild Sunday. Snowfall reached 40-50 inches in parts of New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut, with drifts over 50 feet and winds near 80 mph. More than 400 people died, roughly half in New York City. The storm brought down the overhead telegraph, telephone and electric wires that criss-crossed Manhattan, severing the city's communications, and froze the elevated railways with thousands of commuters aboard. Senator Roscoe Conkling collapsed walking home through the drifts and died weeks later. In the aftermath New York moved its utility lines underground and accelerated the push toward an underground rapid transit system.
