Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan (1885) By Ilya Repin 📍 State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow Repin’s painting begins after the terrible moment has already passed. The sceptre lies on the floor, the room is disturbed, and Ivan holds his son with the panic of someone who understands too late what he may have done. The painting is not really about anger. Anger is already gone. What remains is remorse. Ivan presses his hand against the injury at his son’s temple, trying to stop the consequence of the very act connected to him. The discarded sceptre makes the scene even sharper. A ruler’s power lies useless on the carpet while the father cannot reverse one moment. Repin followed a famous account of Ivan fatally wounding his son, though the exact history is disputed. The emotional truth of the painting is still clear. Regret can be completely real and still arrive too late. Can genuine regret ever undo something irreversible? 👉 Follow @bymuseum for vivid stories and hidden meanings in classical art.
