As a French learner, this is a perfectly valid crashout.

I would explain it as "papa is missing from me" (because he left/is gone)

Yep. It’s funny how each language translates what the “soul” feels differently. I am either expressing that I am feeling a void (*I miss* …), or I am expressing that I am not whole because of the missing part (… *me manque*)

The French being inverted is confusing but I think it’s so beautiful how it doesn’t just mean “I miss you” it means “you are missing from me” like a part of you is gone

my 33-year-old French friend was leaving my house last week and said to my doggie, “you will miss me!” 😂 apparently this is a lifelong battle?

It's crazy, bc we have the same version as French in Hungarian, but since I learned English as a second language, I always wanna say this expression incorrectly in French

In fairness, it makes a lot of sense when you’re saying you miss someone, you’re decrying the fact that they are missing (from you) which is all the French expression is saying.

It's actually very logical because it means that something is missing—someone is missing. So, Dad is missing to me. Papa me manque. Like a part of your life is missing. (I don't know how to explain it otherwise 😅. I'm French, so it seems logical to me.)
