If Tamil language was spoken in SL before a Prakrit, which eventually came to be called Sinhala, there should be evidences. The point is there IS NONE.
In fact oldest undisputable evidence for Tamil in India too come from 7th century.
The notion that Tamil as a language was established in SL comes from Caldwell's assumption. A linguist thinking Tamil must have very old and separate roots from Sanskrit hypothesised that despite absence of evidence for that. That HYPOTHESIS has led to Tamil IMAGINARY history and hence SL war.
The truth is, Prakrit was spoken in modern south india just like in SL. it is a historical fact. It is not that SL is an exception but a remnant of the old Prakrit order. As many scholsrs have pointed out, language planning became a political proj in 7th century south india. Actually what is today understood as Dravidian is the result of these language planning policies.
