But here’s the interesting part: when we look at the history of Ellen White’s writings, we find that literary borrowing was, in fact, taking place. Even the Ellen G. White Estate acknowledges that she used the writings of other authors and that the pioneers considered many statements of “present truth” to be common property. (whiteestate.org⁠) So what did James White actually believe about borrowing from other writers—and how does that compare with what we now know about Ellen White’s literary sources? Why would a messenger of God need to borrow the words of other writers without giving them credit? The fact that literary practices were different in the nineteenth century doesn’t automatically make unattributed copying right. And this wasn’t an isolated incident. Ellen White’s own church has acknowledged that she used the writings of other authors extensively, and Fred Veltman’s eight-year study found substantial literary dependence in The Desire of Ages.
