I don't know if it's hereditary, but my mom says in her family our clean/chaotic seems to alternate generations.

My rule is 20/20 if I can replace it in 20 mins for less than $20 then I can’t “keep it just in case”

I don’t think that you’re a hoarder. I think you have kids and trying to keep up with all of the organizing of the things takes a back seat to parenting and providing for them. If the cupboard doors can shut, it’s put away. That makes 10000000% sense to me. I found that it wasn’t until AFTER my littles became bigs that I was able to organize anything and have it stay organized for any period of time.

My mom is a clean freak. She throws/gives everything away. My hoarding tendencies come in response to having my favorite shirt I wore for my 3rd grade pictures suddenly disappear for 4 months just to discover it ripped into rags & covered in bleach spots in the rag bag. Finding my favorite toys in the trash. Walking into goodwill with my friends & finding my own personalized sports tshirts on the racks & having to buy them back with my babysitting money. I’m also messy because my mother would scream at me if I touched the coffee table books by accident after she went to sleep or didn’t fluff the couch pillows the “right” way after sitting on the couch. If I was eating a yogurt while watching a show, I wasn’t allowed to finish the show or wait for a commercial break, I had to immediately throw away the yogurt & rinse then place the spoon in the dishwasher. It had to be done the instant I finished my yogurt.

A lot of people who may have been raised in or experienced poverty for a long period of time will hoard. And it could definitely be learned too I wonder how genetics could play into hoarding without the environment tho I cannot answer that

Hoarding is definitely hereditary or at least i think genetics definitely play a role imo. But also the fact that your mom is a clean freak plays a role as well! Both you and your mom did opposite of what your mother's did anf there is a link there. Getting rid of the stuff is the first step and then following through to not buying as much is just as important! But hey, at least you are kind of self aware 💕

Have you thought of taking out all of the games from the boxes and putting them into large ziplock bags. You could print off the game directions and tape them inside the bag or cut the front/directions of the box and taping them inside the bag.

Hoarding is a trauma response and hoarding often results from trauma. So, yes, hoarding in my opinion can be hereditary.

I know for me, my hoarding tendencies have actually come from my own anxiety and ADHD being unable to “close the loop”.

I can relate. I am like my dad where I keep a “just in case area“. However, this summer, I cleaned out his garage and there was 50 years worth of “just in case “. I need to follow the rule that if it can be bought again, and I haven’t used it in a year, it needs to go to another home, whatever that will be.

Hoarding is nurture for me. I’m adopted, and the way my mom kept the house clean but with doom piles everywhere. She wouldn’t teach me to clean, just yell at me, and any time I didn’t want to keep something I got guilted into it because “so and so gave this to you”. I have been battling hoarding since I first moved out, add in four kids, a love of shopping, a small house, and no support. When I ended up in a burnout so bad I’m still recovering… and so nothing got done, and now I’m trying to dig, renovate, and clean my way out. It’s a lot. Just had a mini flood which helped clean out a closet 😂

"Genetic and Family Links. Family History: About 50% of people with hoarding disorder report having a relative who also hoards. Heritability Estimates: Research estimates that the genetic trait component ranges from roughly 30% to 50%. Shared Traits: Inherited tendencies related to poor decision-making, organization struggles, or attention deficits can increase risk."

I wouldn't consider myself a big border, but I do keep things sometimes, just in case. Lately I've been looking around, and realize I have too much shit. During covid, when I wasn't working, I got rid of at least 15 boxes of stuff.

It can be. Just like how people that are raised in a home that has to be cleaned why to much can become that way as an adult. But the opposite can be true as well
