That’s because more anime before the Great Shift more animes involved actual adults as the characters and not children and highschoolers. Even ones that were about highschoolers had more adult voices and a lot of adult characters. That’s why in the modern anime cycle we’re starting to get more anime that are about an MC who’s a grown adult. Things like Kaiju No. 8 or Frontier Lord Begins with Zero Subjects or Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You feature characters who are 30+ and have jobs and are already fully formed people when the story starts.

they also don't have the "anime accent." a lot of English dubs have every character with the same weird cadence (pauses in awkward places, unnecessary breathiness) and unrealistic dialogue. they don't sound like real people talking, which can have its own charm, but it's every show and it's getting a little old
