Pic-Nic Bar & Restaurant has been a staple of East Newark for about 30 years, serving Portuguese favorites to Hudson County diners at its longtime home on Grant Avenue. The restaurant, located at 224 Grant Avenue, specializes in the cuisine of northern Portugal, with a menu built around grilled meats, seafood, and traditional dishes. Owner Jonathan Ramos, who took over the business from his father a couple of years ago, said the restaurant has deep roots in the community. "This restaurant has been around for 30 years, a big staple in East Newark," Ramos said. "Basically, our cuisine is from the north part of Portugal, so you get anything from your steak, your seafood, your stews, pig, goat. This is a staple." The menu features dishes like shrimp in garlic sauce, chouriço assado, and mariscada, a seafood dish served in a rich tomato sauce. Another standout is the bitoque, a sirloin steak topped with a fried egg. For dessert, the restaurant serves serradura, a creamy Portuguese treat, and a wine-soaked drunken pear.
