haven't read bobh, and babel is just fine. i rated it pretty high when i first read it, but i keep lowering my rating every time i think about the story. rfk's writing is v in your face & while reading, i could tell whnvr it was her speaking rather than the characters. the character work could've been better. the fantasy aspect might as well not have been there since the world is more or less the way it was irl. what's the point of having magic if the world remains unchanged? it's decent for baby's introduction to colonialism, but it doesn't do anything new other books haven't already done (and better).

Blood Over Bright Heaven did it better in terms of storytelling, Babel have that textbook feeling and that’s coming from a RF Kuang fans

Blood over bright haven is 10x better than babel. I read babel after blood over bright haven and I was thoroughly disappointed. The magic system is just chef’s kissed and that revelation toward the end?? And the ending?? You need to read blood over bright haven!
