Yep. Chad went in about this. Looking fly, whether broke or rich, is/was our culture. We had something I used to call a “cute” sleep. We used to sleep sitting up so we didn’t fucc up our hair. Why? Because we must be fly. Smh. I don’t know what happened that we went from having such pride in our appearance to wearing bonnets and nasty looking rusty pajama’s outside. Looking like something when you leave your house has become respectability politics because Martin n’nem got hosed in suits. Folks say “leave the kids alone” but then those same kids complain that older generations won’t teach them anything and we’re trying to set them up to fail. Idk.

My mother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, and the 2nd mother who is a hairdresser(old school), taught me to NEVER EVER walk out the house without my hair done, over done, ponytail done, slick back bun done, my hair had to be done. No bonnet, rollers, scarves I sleep in where allowed outside the house.

I am so very happy that you are putting this out there. I am Gen X, raised by boomers. I have told people in my circle that wearing a bonnet or pajamas out in public would get you left at home. I was told I better sleep on my face. 😂 That's what Wht. people used to do. Look at those old black-and-white TV shows.
