The interesting question is why organizations allow this to continue. If losing several good employees is easier than confronting one poor leader, the system is effectively protecting hierarchy over performance. Eventually people learn what the organization actually values.

So very true! A job I had a while back that I actually was very successful with. I gave my notice and quit due to a bad manager two weeks after I had already left, I got a call from my prior company asking me if I would consider coming back because they had fired that manager (they were aware of the reasons why I had to quit ).Too little too late. I told them I had already obligated myself to my new position with a different company, and I was not willing to go back on that.
