@luke98733: Roman von Ungern-Sternberg (1886–1921), often called the “Mad Baron,” was a Baltic German aristocrat and Russian military officer who became a prominent White commander during the Russian Civil War. He was fiercely anti-Bolshevik and believed in restoring traditional monarchies and religious authority in Eurasia. In 1920, he entered Mongolia with his Asiatic Cavalry Division, and in February 1921 he defeated the Chinese forces occupying Urga (modern Ulaanbaatar), restoring the Bogd Khan as Mongolia’s monarch. Ungern then ruled much of the capital through an extremely violent and authoritarian regime while attempting to use Mongolia as a base for a wider campaign against the Bolsheviks. In May–June 1921, he invaded Soviet territory but was defeated by Soviet and Mongolian forces.
