To be fair, it's incredibly hard to read many papers if you're not a subject matter expert or at least in the same field! And even then, many papers in my field fly over my head!

The hardest thing about reading a paper is jargon. It's hard to parse an unfamiliar dialect with specific turns of phrases and terms with slightly different meanings. It's also hard to know the context

I've read research papers there's usually a lot of technical jargon and are often unnecessarily long winded which is why most stop after the abstract or skim rather than read deeply.

I’d add that none of this would make any sense unless the reader possesses basic statistical knowledge and familiarity with the scientific process. The materials and methods would read like gibberish instruction manuals, and one would not be able to think critically about the what and how of the paper in context of the why. It takes a lot for an average person to comprehend a biology paper, let alone an epidemiology paper *cough* COVID *cough* if they don’t understand Bayesian statistics.
