**The Gnostics were systematically suppressed and largely wiped out as organized movements by the emerging orthodox Christian Church and, later, by Roman imperial authority.** Gnosticism was never a single, centralized religion. It was a broad collection of related dualistic and esoteric teachings that flourished mainly in the second and third centuries CE within and alongside early Christianity. These groups typically taught that the material world was the flawed creation of a lesser, ignorant, or malevolent deity (the demiurge), distinct from the true transcendent God. Salvation came not primarily through faith in Christ’s atoning death or through the institutional Church, but through secret knowledge (*gnosis*) that awakened the divine spark trapped inside certain human beings. Christ was often understood in docetic terms—as a spiritual being who only appeared to suffer and die—or as a revealer of hidden truths rather than a bodily savior. Teachers such as Valentinus, Basilides, and various Sethian groups produced complex mythologies involving emanations (aeons), a fall from the divine realm (Pleroma), and elaborate schemes of spiritual ascent. These ideas circulated widely in the eastern Mediterranean, Egypt, Syria, and Rome during the second century. Some Gnostic teachers operated inside Christian congregations; others formed separate communities. Their texts included alternative gospels, apocalypses, and treatises later recovered in the Nag Hammadi library.
