I threatened to divorce my wife and seek sole custody of our kids when she mentioned supporting Lindsay Clancy. She keeps bringing up postpartum depression as if it's some unique, otherworldly form of depression that men simply cannot comprehend. It isn't. Postpartum depression is (clinically speaking) just depression. “Postpartum” describes when and in what context it occurs; it doesn't create an entirely different depressive experience. I'm a veteran with PTSD who went through a severe depressive episode years ago. I experienced hopelessness, suicidal thoughts, irritability, withdrawal, hormonal imbalance, impaired functioning, etc. These symptoms don't suddenly become unique experiences because childbirth was the catalyst instead of war. There are biological and contextual factors specific to postpartum depression, absolutely, but the underlying depressive syndrome is not exclusive to women. A different catalyst does not make depression itself a completely different phenomenon, and I wish more women understood that instead of minimizing everything else to ensure they always remain a "unique" victim no matter the situation. We don't give depressed men grace when they annihilate their family. Nor should we. The same goes for depressed women.
