As Latvian, I do know that most people are racist and homophobic although you won’t immediately notice that bc most of them will just say nothing and walk by, but overall historically we haven’t ever had experience in living alongside other races and cultures, Soviet Union also fcked up the mentality of people a lot, mostly young people now are way more educated, but yeah, I wouldn’t recommend it as a native as well.

as a lithuanian - good call, i would never recommend going there if you're not white or white passing. the racism in the baltics has evolved to such a degree that it is methodical and insidious and will wear you out JUST psychogically. the way my parents speak about anyone that isn't white is so jarring, i just have to walk away.

I visited Lithuania last year, and they are racist as fuck! My fiancé was called the hard ER on multiple occasions. I’m currently living in Riga and haven’t had any negative experiences but I haven’t explored the city yet. 😅Will be back to update

Latvian here, yes racism is a huge issue in this country and has been getting worse the past few years even though latvians try to insist we have no racism here. I'm glad you were safe in the end. It is sad that horrible people ruin the experience of the beauty of this country for others but I definitely don't recommend coming here alone, always have a group for safety!

after the fall of the USSR and socialism as a whole, the baltics, allong with most of eastern Europe (for example Poland, Hungary, Croatia) went right back to their pre ww2 ideology, which is fascism in an atempt to distance its people from leftist ideas and since fascism was created and is the inherent opposite of socialism, that was perfect for them, replacing class conflict with nationalism and race superiority

Eastern Europe will not see me 🤣😭 went to Hungary once on a exchange and the family talked about their hatred towards Gypsy/roman people and it made me sooo uncomfortable i said uh uh never again.

Native here. Latvia has several layers of history explaining hatred towards foreigners. There's hatred towards its own people that are from the countryside/small towns. There is also deep fear of foreigners coming in and imposing their way of life on the people. Something that happened all the time historically. It's not just "Latvia is racist". It's that and waay more, a lot more.
