@archiesekhar: Aug 21, The US Treasury Buying Bonds Yield Curve Management via Off the Run Securities. #bonds #stockmarket #financialliteracy #fintok #fyp
I am surprised a well informed person like you may also sometimes not fully understand what's going on. Some institutional money is now going at buying corporate bonds for data centers directly to Nvidia/Google/Meta/OpenAi/Anthropic who are offering a higher yield then the Treasury's current offerings before they raised the rates. The institutions are not buying all of the US debt offerings because the US corporations are giving them a better rate of returns. So what's happening is that they increased the interest rates to make their new debt attractive. But by doing so the existing lower rate bonds that were already sold could drop in value. Those long terms are the ones that the US Treasury started buying to give them a floor. This is nothing to do with inflation concerns for the US economy which is already baked into many other decisions. Of course they will keep doing this until the Data center build demand slows down.

This is the first analysis I have seen that connects the buyback to yield curve management!

Thanks Archie, this whole bond buyback has (up until now 😏) been quite confusing. Thank you for the education!

Fair to say the buy back is to keep bond rates from rising so politically it can be said inflation is under control.

This is also known as the “treasury twist“ They’re selling short-term debt to purchase the long-term debt. And I guarantee you it’s not gonna work.

Does that mean that the yields of the short term bonds will go up?

The Treasury engaged in yield curve control to finance WW2 and after the GFC. Why do it now?

I figured the current 30 year bonds have much lower interest rates. So why buy those back and sell higher interest short bonds?
