@califloragirl: I discovered a large container planted with succulents that had about an inch of standing water. I initially thought it might be a broken drip line, but after investigating, I found that only about eight inches of potting medium sat on top of more than three feet of field soil! (It's a tall, narrow planter.) Over time, water had accumulated at the interface between the coarse potting medium and finer-textured field soil, basically creating a perched water table and leaving the soil completely saturated. #containergardening #landscaping #horticulture #gardening #planthealth
