I'll also add for everyone who's looking for a bit of an explanation: if hay isn't dried / stored properly, there can be moisture on the inside of the bale. The issue with moisture in the middle of a hay bale, is that it will allow bacteria and fungi to grow. Once this happens, if the hay bale reaches a certain temperature (they're good insulators, and they're not stored in climate controlled areas, so the heat basically climbs all Spring / Summer until the temperatures start to consistently stay cool) it can kill off the bacteria and fungi, and then that creates an exothermic reaction with the excess heat which can start a fire, and the whole pile of hay goes up.
