“DOROTHY” Part 1 // NYC’s yellow cabs were once perceived as a golden ticket to the American Dream. With the medallion serving as the license which allowed a vehicle to operate as a taxi, they were originally touted as owning a piece of New York. But when city officials during the Bloomberg and Giuliani administration began to inflate the cost of the medallion for city revenue - with prices hitting upwards of the million-dollar mark at one point - it all turned into a nightmare. Following the rise of ride-share apps like Uber and Lyft, the medallion has now plummeted to almost a tenth of its value, leaving drivers with insurmountable debt. My friend Sara Chisiti is fundraising for @Taxi Driver Documentary, a documentary about NYC’s taxi medallion debt crisis that has driven many drivers into severe financial distress -tragically resulting in nine suicides. Help bring the stories of these cabbies to life by supporting the film’s Kickstarter - via the link above. In an effort to get the word out about this crisis, meet Dorothy Leconte - a longtime NYC cabbie. Currently in $269,000 of debt, I met Dorothy as she drove me to the High Line in her cab. Dorothy's been driving in NYC for 37 years—since the year I was born! She talks about how her dream of owning a medallion turned into a nightmare with massive amounts of debt to pay.
