@hanny_diesel: An amazing dog breed comes with a heartbreaking reality. ❤️‍🩹 If you’ve been here for a while, you probably already know how much I love Dobermans. They’re loyal, smart, goofy, sensitive, and they love their people with everything they have. But unfortunately, this beautiful breed also comes with a high risk of DCM, a heart disease that can sometimes develop without any obvious signs. It’s one of those things I really wish we didn’t have to think about as Doberman owners, but we do. And as scary as it can be, I’d rather know and do what I can. That’s why regular heart screenings like Holter monitoring and echocardiograms are so important. When changes are caught early, there are treatments and lifestyle changes that can help manage the condition and hopefully give us more quality time with them. Diesel is going to be 8 years old in November, so we’re at the point where we closely monitor his heart every 6 months. For younger Dobies, screening can normally be done once a year, unless your vet or cardiologist recommends otherwise. Because even knowing all of this, I’d still choose a Doberman.
